There are quite specific plans in Germany now to make some minimum old age pension and corresponding contributions mandatory for freelancers / self-employed. So far we were completely free to chose whether to pay into some scheme or not, and the choice of schemes was also free. What about other countries? What is your experience? |

Contribution to the public social security/retirement pension scheme has been mandatory for freelance professionals in Portugal for quite a while. Recently matters were made more onerous inasmuch as we're no longer free to choose our level of coverage - and consequently the amount we pay in - but the latter is now linked to our reported income, social security coverage now being the same for all; if one single client has paid us 80% of our income over the year, it too will have to pay into our social security capital, on top of what we already did. Furthermore, any optional schemes we may happen to contribute to - such as CPIC - are non-deductible from local SS payments. |
